Dispute has emerged in Papua New Guinea regarding proposals to construct the country’s inaugural gambling establishment.

The gaming venue, an element of the broader Paga Hill project in Port Moresby, seeks to draw international visitors, not residents.
Dr. Uma Ambi, a prominent figure in mental health, contends that the initiative disregards the evident correlation between wagering and psychological difficulties, including dependency and its effects on slumber, employment, and general health. She emphasizes that gambling can dominate an individual’s thoughts, causing inattentiveness and worsening pre-existing mental health ailments.
Conversely, Clemens Kanau, Head of the National Gaming Control Board, downplays these apprehensions, asserting that the casino will serve foreigners and generate essential employment opportunities for the nation grappling with significant joblessness.
